Professional Case Study

BI Data Lineage, Documentation & Standardization

Making legacy reporting architecture, business logic, and dependencies visible enough to maintain, optimize, and migrate with confidence.

This is a sanitized professional case study. No proprietary datasets, customer information, confidential business rules, internal screenshots, or production code are published here.

The goal

Legacy SQL Server reporting solutions had accumulated years of business logic, dependencies, and institutional knowledge. The objective was to create a standardized documentation and data-lineage framework so critical reporting could be understood, maintained, optimized, and eventually migrated more reliably.

What I documented

  • Report architecture, source data, business rules, database objects, dependencies, and end-to-end data flows.
  • How source data and logic moved through SQL Server processes into downstream reporting.
  • Reusable technical information for analysts, developers, and consultants supporting troubleshooting, requirements, maintenance, and redevelopment.

Automation & cleanup opportunities

I incorporated APEX SQL documentation tooling to automate technical documentation of server-side database objects. During the lineage review, we also identified unused views, redundant objects, and ETL/reporting-pipeline optimization opportunities. Those findings helped trigger a broader cleanup effort that I also supported.

Impact

The work reduced reliance on institutional knowledge, improved visibility into dependencies and lineage, exposed technical debt, and created a more consistent foundation for troubleshooting, development, cleanup, and future data-platform migration.

What this demonstrates

Documentation as engineering work: reverse-engineering a legacy BI environment, mapping dependencies, using automation, identifying technical debt, and turning that knowledge into a practical modernization asset.
