The pilot
I was selected to support an innovative last-mile delivery proof of concept evaluating flexible pop-up sorting and delivery locations. My primary responsibility was building the data foundation needed to understand facility activity, delivery performance, exceptions, and operational gaps.
My role
I owned the data engineering and database side of the solution. I helped shape the early alpha version of the Tableau report, but as the project matured the customer-facing design direction was primarily owned by the project manager. I maintained and updated the report within that framework while continuing to own the underlying data and database development.
Data engineering
- Transformed semi-structured Bringg and later FarEye exports into structured, historical, analytics-ready datasets.
- Developed SSIS packages in Visual Studio/SSDT to ingest CSV files delivered through SFTP.
- Built SQL Server Agent jobs, automated processing workflows, staging and historical data models.
- Developed stored procedures for inserts, updates, deletes, validation, exception handling, and incremental historical processing.
- Created analytical SQL views supplying the reporting layer with scanner activity, driver and delivery performance, exceptions, orders, and operational-gap data.
Working with evolving requirements
I worked closely with the project manager as the proof of concept evolved, adapting the data structures, processing logic, and reporting outputs to support changing pilot needs.
Impact
The solution created a scalable historical data foundation that helped project leadership monitor and improve the proof of concept, troubleshoot operational issues, and communicate pilot performance to senior leadership.
